Irma Thomas

The undisputed queen of New Orleans soul, Irma Thomas' 45-year career in show business has taken her from unknown 16-year-old blues-club singer to hit songstress, with tunes like the red-hot "You Can Have My Husband (But Please Don't Mess with My Man)," and Allen Toussaint’s "It’s Rainin'," "Cry On," and "I Done Got Over It." She left music for a spell in the '60s, working a day job in California and raising four daughters as a single mother, but returned to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in the late '70s--a move that sparked a resurgence in her singing career and landed her on the Rounder Records label with several critically acclaimed recordings.

A live project, Sing It! (1998), featured Irma with Marcia Ball and Tracy Nelson. Recorded at Slim's 333 Club in San Francisco in 1990, it was nominated for a Grammy in '99 as Best Contemporary Blues Recording. Thomas’s reputation continues to grow worldwide.
