The Cherry Blossom Orchestra formed in 2016 as a response to the anniversary of Louis Armstrong's performances from the roof of the Lloyd Shopping Mall in the mid ‘60s, at the time the largest mall in the country. The band is committed to playing the music of the 1920s, 1930s, and earlier as authentically as possible, with premier musicians in every seat. The group strives to reproduce the experience of hearing first-hand the greatest bands of that era: those led by Fletcher Henderson, King Oliver, Duke Ellington, Bennie Moten, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong and many others. It is to play the music with the respect it deserves, and to present it so as to leave the audience in no doubt as to its rightful place in American cultural history. The group’s sweet spot is the period just prior to the big band era and it has have been entertaining listening and dancing audiences across Portland and touring Oregon.
