“Hank Shreve is quite simply one of the best harmonica players I have ever heard. He is a fiery, open minded, unique, musical harmonica player that can share the stage with any living player of any ability and hold his own or out shine them. He is a monster musician and a great person on top of that!” – Jason Ricci
Hank Shreve has been a regular feature at Waterfront Blues Festival since he was in his teens, for a number of years as collaborator with Ty Curtis that took them to the IBC finals, then as a featured soloist with Bill Rhoades’ annual Harmonica Blow-off, and last year with the Paul deLay Tribute. There’s no harmonica player on the planet that has as nuanced an understanding of deLay’s harmonica work, and no-one has ever come closer to recreating that tone and phrasing.
Though a brilliant harmonica player, Hank is equally stunning on piano and, lap steel. This year Hank returns for the first time in years with his own band, augmented by horns and back-up vocals, in a not-to-be missed show.
Hank Shreve began playing harmonica at the age of 8 and has established himself as a major harmonica talent on the blues scene in the Pacific Northwest. Between the age of 8 and 18, he became proficient on other instruments such as vocals, drums, keyboards, guitar, dobro and lap-steel.
He received the Northwest Harmonica Championship in 2006, and the CBA’s “Muddy Award” for Best Harmonica in both 2009 and 2013. Hank was a featured artist in the Harmonica Blow-off at the 2009 Waterfront Blues Festival along with Rick Estrin and Randy Chortkoff. He also was a featured harmonica player at Harpdog Brown’s “International Harmonica Showcase” in White Rock, Canada.
In addition to many music luminaries, he has shared the stage with delta-blues legend Honeyboy Edwards, Smash Mouth, Merle Haggard, Norton Buffalo, Gregg Rolie, Marcia Ball, Sista Monica Parker, Amy Clawson & Pam Tillis, Terry Robb, Magic Dick, Lee Oskar, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Karen Lovely, Deanna Bogart, Roger Fisher (from Heart), Curtis Salgado, DK Stewart, Lloyd Jones, Paul deLay and many other well-known national and international acts.
Hank and his band, (The Hank Shreve Band) have performed at numerous notable venues/events such as The Waterfront Blues Festival, Big Sky Blues Festival, Fourth At The Fort Festival, Seven Feathers Casino, Three Rivers Casino, Willamette Blues/Brews Festival, Eugene Celebration, Oregon State Fair, Highway 99 Blues Club (Seattle), Jazzbones (Tacoma), Sasquatch Brewfest (Eugene), just to name a few! The Hank Shreve Band has won the CBA’s Muddy Award for Best New Act 2012, and Best Regional Act 2013, 2014, & 2016.
Apart from being one of Eugene, Oregon’s respected and well-known musicians, Hank teaches music with a curriculum that includes harmonica, drums, guitar, lap-steel and piano. He is an official Artist-In-Residence at Music Masters in South Eugene.
The Hank Shreve appears with his Big Band which includes: Randy Oxford, Tom Poole, Chelsea Luker (“Quadrophones”), Ken Luker, Bill Shreve, and Tim Siefert.
