Under the musical direction of Devin Phillips, THE AMERICAN MUSIC PROGRAM (AMP), part of the Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra, continues to be the nation’s premier student jazz orchestra.
Under the direction of acclaimed saxophonist DEVIN PHILLIPS, and having won the Monterey Jazz Festival student competition in 2016, the AMP Big Band was the only student band to perform on the big stage at the famous Monterey Jazz Festival. In addition, AMP’s Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra received an outstanding Large Jazz Ensemble award in the 39th annual Downbeat Student Music Awards.
The award-winning band will perform on the Brewery Main Stage on Wednesday, July 4, joined by special guest vocalists Jarrod Lawson and Tahira Memory.
Jarrod Lawson—a phenomenal vocalist, keyboardist and songwriter—has become wildly and widely popular not only in the Pacific Northwest but in Europe as well—sharing stages with the likes of Bilal, Average White Band, Angelique Kidjo, Ronnie Laws, and former Portlander and rising star, Liv Warfield, who refers to Jarrod as simply, “The Truth.” Whether Jarrod sings and plays funk, folk, R&B, rock or jazz—as has been said many times—“everything he touches turns to soul.”
Portland singer/songwriter Tahirah Memory— daughter of the late, Grammy-winning trumpeter and AMP founder, Thara Memory—is creating a buzz amongst soul music lovers in Europe with her debut album, Pride. Co-produced by Lawson, the album has received heavy radio play in the UK and elsewhere internationally. Tahira can currently be seen touring abroad as a background vocalist for Lawson, and has shared the studio or stage with a wide range of collaborators, including her late father, Andy Stokes, drummer Christopher Brown, saxophonist Hailey Niswanger, latin percussionist Bobby Torres, Eddie Martinez, hip hop duo Lifesavas, trumpeter Farnell Newton, pianist and composer Darrell Grant, pianist and co-writer of much of her music Brian Ward, and Grammy winning Esperanza Spalding.
The AMP Band is a program of the Pacific Crest Sinfonietta, a registered not-for-profit organization which is one of the top, nationally recognized leaders in educating 7th-12th grade students in original American music. Students from diverse backgrounds are recruited from throughout the Portland metropolitan area. The Program’s goal is not only to learn and perform American music, including Jazz, Blues, swing and contemporary, but also to bring its finest qualities to the lives of students and the community.
Many AMP students have become celebrated music professionals, including triple Grammy winner ESPERANZA SPALDING, saxophonist HAILEY NISWANGER, saxophonist NICOLE GLOVER, and many others.
